Which Parts of a Bathroom Get Waterproofed

A shower is only one part of it. In Australia, the Standard for wet areas (AS 3740) sets out which areas need waterproofing and how. This is how it looks in a typical bathroom.

A bathroom plan showing the areas that are waterproofed Seen from above: the shower floor and walls, the whole bathroom floor falling to a floor waste, the walls around the bath, the splash area behind the vanity, and a water stop at the doorway. SHOWERBATHVANITYWC 123456

  1. The showerIts floor and walls: the part of the room that takes the most water.
  2. The rest of the floorSo water that gets past the shower can't reach the structure.
  3. Around the bathThe walls and edges where water splashes and sits.
  4. Behind the basinThe splash area above the vanity.
  5. The doorwayA water stop, so water can't run out under the door.
  6. The floor wasteWhere the floor falls, and the membrane seals into the drain.

Every bathroom is different. We'll show you what yours needs when we quote.

Waterproofing is very black and white. Your bathroom is either waterproof, or it isn't.

Before the tiles

One of the First Steps, and the One Everything Relies On

When a bathroom is built or renovated, waterproofing is one of the first things to happen. It's a waterproof barrier around the walls and floor that protects the structure of your house from moisture.

Once the tiles are down you'll never see it again, so it has to be done properly the first time.

Waterproofing During a Renovation

The membrane goes on after the strip-out and before the tiles. This is how it fits in.

Bathroom Waterproofing Questions

The questions we're asked most about waterproofing a whole bathroom.

Ask us a question
Does the whole bathroom need waterproofing?

The shower always does, and the rest of the room needs protecting too, especially the floor, around the bath and at the doorway. Exactly what is required depends on the room and what the floor is made of. We'll show you what your bathroom needs when we quote.

How is this different from shower waterproofing?

Shower waterproofing covers the shower recess on its own, usually because its membrane has failed. Bathroom waterproofing covers the whole room, usually during a renovation. Shower waterproofing

Do you waterproof laundries, ensuites and toilets?

Yes. Any wet area in the house: bathrooms, ensuites, laundries and toilets, as well as balconies.

Can you waterproof over the existing tiles?

No. A waterproof membrane goes under the tiles, so the old tiles and bed come up first. That's why bathroom waterproofing is usually done as part of a renovation.

When does waterproofing happen in a renovation?

After the strip-out and preparation, and before any tiling. It's one of the first steps, and the one everything else relies on.

Do you do the tiling as well?

Yes. We tile bathrooms, ensuites, laundries and toilets, so the same team is responsible for the membrane and the finish on top. Tiling services
